3 Easy and Beneficial Actions To Take Into The New Year : Friday’s with Filar #009

Ahh the beloved in-between holiday work week. Where either you took this week off or youre working when no ones working and therefore you’re actually not working. Regardless of how you’ve been treating the past week, I hope its been filled with everything you wanted.

For myself, it was balanced between a day off on Monday, a riveting concert experience Tuesday night, an emotional rollercoaster of a day yesterday, and now going into an incredibly optimistic Friday and holiday weekend to follow.

I’ve shared this with a few people before, but NYE is my favorite holiday. There’s no other singular holiday/day on the planet, where all 8 Billion people celebrate in similar capacities. Think about it - regardless of your religion, race, creed, country, or beliefs, you know the calendar turns and the year starts a new this weekend. Even for Asian countries - there of course is Chinese New Year, but they still acknowledge the calendar change.

Secondarily, I love that it provides a ‘starting point’ for everyone at least once a year. Regardless if its more of a placebo affect or not, everyone can share in the idea of starting over come Sunday and build new habits or focus on themselves a bit more or whatever it may be.

And I love that for all of you. But Time doesn’t wait for no one. The world moves regardless if you like it or not. For some people that know me personally, I love the expression “Moving at the speed of life” - cause that’s really all we can do.

With that being said, I’ve been thinking about a few simple mentalities and actions people can take into the new year to generate a more productive, balanced, goal accomplishing year ahead.

Three easy and beneficial actions you can take into the New Year:

1) Start Today

I talk about this probably to a point of nausea for some people but I still see all these m** f**ers complaining about life when they’re not willing to make change. You think waiting two more days to make that new years resolution is going to get you to ACTUALLY get going? Personally, I don’t believe so. If you couldn’t start today, what makes you think you starting in two days is going to be the reason you complete that goal?

Everyones looking for an excuse to prolong what they don’t want to do. Those who actually are committed to goals, will giddy up and get going. Go pursue your dreams and aspirations and start today.

I just watched a podcast yesterday and they mentioned 91% of people who start a New Years resolution don’t complete it. But of those same people who actually make a resolution vs people who don’t, they tend to be more successful over time because they were willing to try in the first place. So there’s a little bit of sunshine for ya.

2) Pay Attention To Attention

I really owe this one to Gary Vaynerchuk and the copious amount of content I consume of his on youtube and in podcasts. A couple years ago he said something so simple, and yet so profound it took my brain by storm. He said “Im really good at watching where peoples attention goes”

Til that moment, I never even knew people did that. But its so true. From a marketing, branding, business perspective - if you’re able to see where shifts are in the world based on how people attention towards their habits or aspects of their life goes, you have a massive advantage.

I’d like to think even myself being aware of this, let alone studying and watching peoples attention, gives me a huge leg up towards my competition. And I think its held true so far. Ive not only become more observant of shifts in culture, but am able to speak in fact (versus opinion) a lot more. And that’s always an advantage.

3) Keep Fucking Going

Thursday this week would be a prime example of this. One day in the very distant future, someone remind me to tell this story on a podcast about the emotional rollercoaster that I went on at work on December 29th.

The thing that working for a start up has reconfirmed in me, is resiliency. People talk about getting punched in the mouth or falling down all the time. But do they keep getting back up. Every week, every day, even every hour, something changes in this line of work. One second your cheering about good news, the next you get absolutely gut wrenched that something else happened to potentially derail another thing. Its an endless and vicious cycle.

But the best part? How fucking cool it is when you get over that wall. When you keep solving one problem after another after another - its the greatest feeling in the world.

Life is going to throw you twists and turns, slaps and spits, but if you’re able to consistently push through and turn negatives into positives, this life aint so bad.

If there was a fourth point to share, it would be try to be more positive. The worlds too negative - you can be the source of inspiration or change for someone else.
