1st Week Of The Year Burn Out: Friday’s with Filar #0010

Happy new year everyone! What an incredible time to be alive, see another year be born, providing us with all the potential in the world to do what we want, when we want. Well, for the most part.

Im sure most of us can relate that it feels like yesterday when 2022 started. The year jetted by filled with growth, emotion, pain, and probably even some sadness. But the 2022 final page was turned and the 2023 chapter begins.

Its a fresh start for all of us. It’s our time now! Right? My life is filled with that same energy, no different then yours. Diving right into the year, I couldn’t write this blog without including a tiny section on what the Endstate team accomplished on Tuesday, January 3rd down in Philly…

Dose of Design ✍🏼 :

This past Tuesday, we drove down from Boston to Philadelphia to hold a Meet & Greet with DeVonta Smith of the Philadelphia Eagles. 6 months ago, we got to work with him on creating his first signature sneaker, and co-designing it to his liking. After months of development, logistics, and rush ordering a number of select pairs from the factory - the sneakers arrived and we were on our way.

We’re super fortunate to have found a brand and partner like Lapstone & Hammer to host the event with us and provide an absolutely stunning venue for DeVonta and his team. It’s crazy too see how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time. I remember the first sketches in June/July 2022 and now here we are the first of the year presenting him the sneakers.

We all know I’m hyper biased towards what we do, but even if I wasn’t working for the brand… where else do you get to meet an athlete because you own their sneakers? You don’t get access to Lebron or KD or anyone in the league cause of their shoes. But we do that. Just for you. And it was awesome. Check it out:

On the drive back, our CEO looks over and the time display reads 1:39 PM in the car. He says “This time yesterday we were just arriving in Philly. What a crazy past 30 hours”

And that’s what it took. A non stop relentless effort to pull it off.

Most people would be exhausted by it and probably take the following morning slower, but I’m back up at 6am writing this blog. So why doesn’t all this work burn me out?

The Main Idea 🕵🏼‍♂️ :

I don’t know about you, but this year was one of the first where I took NYE actually low-key. No crazy parties, no traveling, not even too much drinking. It helped me be super refreshed and ready to go on the 1st of the year which lead to a highly productive Sunday and Monday (Monday being the holiday and having the day off).

But after speaking with a number of people, the excitement of the New Year, really gets people going. They are flooded with ambition, goals, and are in the ra-ra spirit. What I fear is that most people go from 0 to 100 way too quickly and tend to burn out. Most aren’t prepared to go all in on their new goals. You can’t just start waking up at 5am if you’re use to waking up at 8. You need to slowly transition to that. You don’t just start going to the gym 5 days a week when you were going 0 days. You’ll burn out too quick. You don’t go from eating meat to just eating like a rabbit full time. You’ll give up on the diet in a matter of weeks.

I’ve literally done all of the above in that manner and it never works out. The key to not burning out or rather, setting yourself up for success in the new year is to interwork these new ideas into your schedule transitionally. Take that idea and implement it in 2-3 days versus all 5. Get use to it, get hooked on it, then have it become ritual.

The biggest take away about New Years resolutions is patience. Everyone expects the six pack in a month, but reality is you’ll look the same after 30 days. But do it for 6,7,8 months and you’ll find yourself looking like a different person.

Slight aside:

Over the course of my career I’ve very regularly burnt out every 5-6 weeks. From working 14 hour days, adding on hobbies like art or making things, or the times where I held a second job, it would cause me to burn out. In the past 4 months or so, the burn out has been subdued. I think the main reason is not faulting myself for not accomplishing something in the imaginary time frame I give myself. Sort of leads back to patience and that it’ll get done in due time.

Anyway, hope everyone has a lovely beginning to the start of their year.

Its a great day to have a great day.

See you next Friday.

Good things.
