I bought a house.

And then I learned.

And then I sold it.

In September of 2019 (and four months prior) I made the decision to purchase my first house. Back then, I’ve always wanted to purchase a home - it was a dream of mine. Today I have a different perspective on that; that its been engrained in our brains for our youth that its the american dream and culture to buy a house. .

But back then I did it for a number of reasons - it was something I always wanted to achieve, to show myself I could survive on my own after my fiance left, to build equity in something that no one could take away from me - it would be in my control.

Just under a year after ownership I listed that same house on the market. Over that year I learned the ins and outs of home ownership - legal, property management, maintenance. Most importantly, I learned when you have this much of an investment on one persons shoulders, it pushes you to the absolute limits physically, mentally, emotionally… I learned that it’s a lot of fucking space inside 4 walls that you need to upkeep and take care of yourself. I learned that I have cleanliness OCD. And learned that it gets really fucking quiet at night when youre alone.

While all the above paragraph seems negative - it’s not. Those experiences made me a better person. They increased my skillset and knowledge bases that I formerly did not have. And the largest take away is that it truly does not matter what other peoples perception of you or your life is. Life is about progression. Life is about learning and that learning curve should always be going up.

Best of all - without knowing it until it was over, this turned into the most beautiful project I’ve ever worked on. I turned beaten up square feet of space and transformed it into a clean comfortable living area.

I’ve never created like this before; a way where the process was greater than the end result.

September 2018 - September 2019.
